Using the Wrong Business Category

Google uses your primary category to determine which searches trigger your business listing. Choosing the wrong category means you appear for the wrong searches or do not appear at all.

A common example: a physiotherapy clinic selecting “Health and Wellness” as their primary category instead of “Physiotherapist” or “Physical Therapy Clinic.” The generic category competes with gyms, spas, and wellness centers instead of showing up for people specifically searching for physiotherapy.

Check your category by searching for your exact business name on Google and looking at what category appears. Then search for your main service plus your area (like “physiotherapist DIFC”) and see which competitors appear. If they use a more specific category, switch yours to match.

Incomplete Business Information

Google rewards profiles that are complete. Missing information tells Google your profile is not well maintained, which reduces your visibility.

Fill in every field available: business hours (including special hours for holidays), phone number, website URL, business description using your key services and location, service area or address, attributes (wheelchair accessible, free WiFi, etc.), and appointment links if applicable.

Not Using the Q&A Feature

The Q&A section on your Google profile is publicly visible and often one of the first things people read. Yet most Dubai businesses do not proactively manage it.

Add your own questions and answers covering the most common things customers ask. Do you accept card payments? What are your parking options? Do you offer home visits? What areas do you serve? By adding these preemptively, you provide useful information and fill your profile with relevant content.

Monitor the Q&A section regularly. Anyone can ask questions and anyone can answer them, including competitors. Respond promptly to ensure accurate information is provided.

Having Duplicate Profiles

Some businesses inadvertently have multiple Google Business Profiles, sometimes from a previous owner, a different location, or an employee who created one independently. Duplicate profiles confuse Google and split your reviews and visibility between two listings.

Search for your business name on Google Maps and look for any duplicate listings. If you find one, claim it (if unclaimed) and then request Google to merge it with your primary profile. This consolidates your reviews and improves your ranking.
